Couse House

Couse House by Suzanne Schleck, Oil, 9 x 12

This painting shows the back porch and garden of the E. Irving Couse home in downtown Taos New Mexico. The colonial adobe home overlooks a beautiful meadow and is surrounded by lovely flowers. I loved the color of the adobe with the garden flowers and the curve of the roof line. I felt so inspired by the beauty around me that day that I still remember how my paint brush danced around my canvas giving me the feeling that the painting painted itself. It was another magical day painting in Taos.

I needed permission to paint on the grounds so I asked Couses's granddaughter Virginia who still lives there. She said it would be OK but don't paint on the porch. She has generously given the home to the Couse Foundation which has done a wonderful job opening part of the home and studio to the public. Several of Couse's amazing academic paintings done in Paris are on display in the house. Don't miss the home and studio when you visit Taos. This is museum second for me only to the Fechin house for top sites to see in Taos.
